The new Vice President of Splash Pals Adapted Aquatics can be described as adventurous, multi-talented, intelligent, and hard working. Jessica Millwood is a rising senior at FAU and is pursuing medical school with the hope of one day becoming a pediatrician. During our Monday night pool sessions it is easy to see that any child would be blessed to have Jessica as their doctor. Since May, she has enjoyed helping our participants swim, stretch, play, and increase their social skills through aquatic activity. Jessica explains that her favorite part of being in the Adapted family is seeing her participants smile and laugh. She can be seen working most often with Benjamin and draws strength from his “nothing can stop me” attitude.
Born in Brooklyn, Jessica moved down to sunny South Florida when she was just four years old and has called our beautiful state home ever since. Her Jamaican heritage inspires her thirst for adventure; she has been visiting her grandmother and great grandmother in Jamaica ever since she can remember. Visits to the Caribbean island have helped her learn Patois, sometimes referred to as Jamaican Creole, which she speaks fluently at home.
Outside of Adapted Jessica is a Resident Advisor on campus, has a love for all things sports, enjoys singing in the shower, and belongs to the on campus Pulse Dance Troupe. Sometimes confused by the French words spoken in ballet, this week’s star volunteer prefers Hip-Hop because she is able to physically express herself and escape to a state of mental clarity and meditation. Jessica’s favorite quote comes from the Dalai Lama when he was asked what surprised him most about humanity and he replied, “Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.” Jessica lives in the present while keeping a motivated spirit working towards the future and is sure that life will not pass her by.
